‘See for Me’ Review: Blind Assassin Leads IFC’s Gripping Thriller

Visually impaired actor Skylar Davenport performs a blind home sitter dealing with a house invasion in a triumph of genuine casting.

From “Scent of a Lady” to “Dancer within the Darkish,” blind characters onscreen have not often been performed by the visually impaired. Whereas current movies like “CODA” and “Sound of Metallic” have proven deaf characters with nuance and genuine casting, blindness has not been afforded the identical progress. Particularly in style fare, blindness is commonly used to point a sure grisly callousness (see: the “Don’t Breathe” movies), or a sagely omniscience (like Grasp Aemon in “Sport of Thrones,” performed by blind actor ). Despite the fact that genuine casting undoubtedly creates the most effective characters, such S. Robert Morgan as Omar’s trusted advisor Butchie on “The Wire,” as with all issues progress, Hollywood has taken awhile to catch on.

The tense house invasion thriller “See for Me,” from style mainstay IFC Midnight, affords a refreshing twist on the blind protagonist: an apathetic younger lady with angle and crafty to spare. Performed by visually impaired actor Skylar Davenport (who’s non-binary and taking part in cisgender), Sophie is a former aggressive skier who has turned to accommodate sitting for the uber rich since dropping her imaginative and prescient. Dejected however by no means self-pitying, she rebuffs her mom’s issues about her mysterious money deposits with the disdain of a surly teenager. Decided to claim her independence, Sophie depends on video calls with a buddy to tour her short-term new digs, a spacious fashionable compound stuffed with precious artwork and costly wine. When she pockets a very good bottle, her buddy all of the sudden grows a conscience and bows out of the profitable hustle.

When she will get locked out on her cigarette break she resorts to making an attempt “See for Me,” a service that connects seeing individuals with the visually impaired. After hanging up on a very saccharine operator, she will get matched with the all the way down to earth Kelly (Jessica Parker Kennedy), who rapidly disarms Sophie’s quick mood from her candy gaming console. Sensing a kindred spirit, Sophie saves Kelly’s contact within the app — and simply in time.

From watchful exterior pictures of the chilly mansion in desolate snowy woods, it’s clear one thing is afoot. In director Randall Okita’s imaginative and prescient of the eerily serene environment, no element is wasted in constructing the strain. The way in which Sophie’s backlit silhouette creeps alongside the basement hallway or a nonetheless shot lingers on the leafy greenhouse suggests a much less peaceable return to those settings looms. As Sophie runs her palms alongside each easy designer floor, one thing so simple as a slate ground or a house safety alarm panel takes on added which means. Designed inside an inch of its life, all of the sudden this architectural marvel feels hole, the pristine trappings of extreme wealth turning into chilly and foreboding.

When a workforce of three males break in, simply shelling out with the pesky house alarm system that triggered such a headache, Sophie instantly calls Kelly. Not simply helpful for her snark, it seems Kelly is a former infantry soldier who spends her down time taking part in “Name of Responsibility.” With the video name patched by to her gaming console, she has an ideal vantage level to information Sophie by the perilous house invasion. Not solely sensible however morally shiftable, Sophie isn’t one to be underestimated. Her porous allegiances maintain issues attention-grabbing, offering sufficient shifts in momentum to maintain everybody — viewers and ruthless robbers alike — on their toes.

Shot in Canada with a largely Canadian forged and crew, “See for Me” advantages from a forged of skilled actors who will not be recognizable to most. Because the lead and focus, Davenport anchors the motion with their instinctual efficiency, taking part in Sophie with a pointed ferocity that’s clearly masking deep ache. The motley crew of burglars is an eclectic mixture of brutish goon squad and easy talkers. Seasoned “Sons of Anarchy” character actor Kim Coates is a pleasant late addition as prison mastermind Rico; he squeezes each drop out of an enthralling voice efficiency together with his Joe Pesci-drawl. When he lastly seems onscreen, it’s as if we all know him already.

“See for Me” wastes no body in its brisk 92 minute operating time, it’s a tightly-wound thriller propelled by sufficient turns that you simply received’t wish to miss a beat. Led by an unlikely hero in acerbic Sophie, it’s positive to fulfill shrewd style audiences preferring their suspense with out turning bodily incapacity right into a punchline. This time, she’s doing the punching.

Grade: B+
