Chinese immigrant injured in vicious, unprovoked attack in East Harlem dies months later

MANHATTAN, New York — A Chinese language immigrant who was brutally attacked in April whereas gathering cans in East Harlem has died of his accidents, and his case is now deemed a murder, police mentioned Saturday.

Yao Pan Ma, 61, died Dec. 31, police mentioned. His assault drew nationwide consideration as a part of an increase in anti-Asian hate crimes in New York and across the nation. The investigation continues.

Jarrod Powell, 49, of New York Metropolis, was beforehand charged with tried homicide, felony assault and hate crime fees within the case.
